Discovering My Favorite Breakfast at Citizen In Richmond, Virginia

Is there anyone out there that doesn’t love brunch? If you, for whatever reason, are on the fence about your feelings on the time-honored tradition of eating a combination of the best breakfast and lunch foods, your next stop should be to Citizen in Richmond, Virginia.

This awesome spot is home to a dish that, from the first bite, became my favorite brunch dish I’ve ever had, the Disco Eggs.

We took a seat at the bar in this trendy location and enjoyed good music, excellent service, and then came the fantastic food. Citizen defines itself as being “fresh, creative, and seasonal” and they are spot on. Each dish was a creative fusion of multiple cultures, made of fresh, flavorful ingredients.

I had the Disco Eggs ($9.25) – 2 eggs with green onion, peppers, cilantro, curry and chili powder over masala potatoes and finished with green chutney and served with toasted flatbread and a side. This meal packs a punch. An Indian-American fusion of flavors, I was blown away by the creativity and balance of this dish that left me wishing I could have this chimichurri and curry dream everyday. I chose the tabbouleh as my side, which was a little heavier on the couscous than I prefer – I would’ve liked more of the chopped mint and parsley instead – but it was a fresh and tasty accompaniment.

We shared the Blueberry Goat Cheese Crepes ($7.75) with the lemon curd topping. In a word: delicious. It was creamy and fresh, the lemon, blueberry, and goat cheese was a dreamy combination of flavor and texture. This came with a side as well and we chose the lentils and feta. Our side had only a few, larger chunks of feta mixed into the lentils so my only criticism would be the fact I wanted a little more feta to lentil ratio.

Brenden had the Breakfast Burrito ($8.75) – Scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese, peppers, green onions, crema, and cumin potatoes wrapped in a flour tortilla served with tomatillo salsa and a side. This burrito was hearty and fresh and the tomatillo salsa was the perfect condiment.

We finished off an excellent meal with Vietnamese Iced Coffees ($3.50). For anyone who hasn’t tried one before, Vietnamese Iced Coffee is a strong, rich coffee counterbalanced by a thick, sugary sweetened condensed milk. It is brewed in a phin at a very slow drip that makes you slow down and appreciate the process. Then, when it’s complete, you stir thoroughly and enjoy the yin and yang of dark and bitter with sweet and creamy flavors in your cup.

Overall, Citizen brought fresh, creative dishes to the table in a cool location with a great vibe. I left wishing I could bring this spot back to Pittsburgh with me.
